Be the first to RankAs designers, we are used to having quite a bit of control over how things are displayed in a browser. Sure, differing rendering engines don’t always agree on everything, but for the most part we can at least find ways to mitigate variance through workarounds, or by writing for the lowest common denominator.
By far, one of the most frustrating parts of dealing with browser inconsistencies has got to be forms. There are two distinctively differing schools of thought regarding (not) styling form elements. For the longest time, we’ve had people on both sides of the proverbial fence, neither group.. Location: Graphics & Design / CSS

The Poetic Prophet (AKA The SEO Rapper) is back with another marketing rap. This time he describes how web standards and proper design can affect the ranking and conversion of pages on your site.
lyrics:Your site design is the first thing people see
it should be reflective of you and the industry
easy to look at with a nice navigation
when you can't find what you want it causes frustration
a clear Call to action to increase the temptation
use appealing graphics they create motivation
if you have animation
use with moderation
cause search engines can't index the information

Be the first to RankOnce upon a time, there was the mighty GIF image format, the most popular type of image compression for web graphics. Then, it was announced that software programs using GIF would require a license (this was because of the Unisys patent for the LZW compression method used in GIF). This change sped up the development for its successor: the PNG format. PNG, which stands for Portable Network Graphics, gained popularity and, nowadays, it’s probably the most used image format when it comes to web design, alongside JPEG. Location: Graphics & Design

Be the first to RankInternet technologists have long known that HTTP is insecure, causing many risks to users. The release of Firesheep made one of these risks concrete and obvious to even non-technical folks.
While HTTPS has long existed as a reasonable way to improve web security, web operators have been slow to host their applications with it. In part, this is because correctly and completely hosting an application with HTTPS takes some care.
This article is designed to help web operators get a conceptual handle on how to protect their users with HTTPS. Taking a little bit of care to protect your users is.. Location: Servers & Deploy

Be the first to RankAs web technologies constantly advance, the skills a developer is expected to have are constantly increasing. Web users are beginning to expect Ajax interfaces, charts and graphs and a whole host of other tricks and features. This means web developers not only have to be skilled with HTML and a server-side programming language such as PHP or Perl, but they now also need to be JavaScript gurus, Flash experts, and skilled graphic designers. Be the first to RankFloat is a CSS positioning property. To understand its purpose and origin, we can look to print design. In a print layout, images may be set into the page such that text wraps around them as needed. This is commonly and appropriately called “text wrap”. Here is an example of that. Location: CSS

Be the first to RankI am currently in the process of learning CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) based web design since it is now the standard foundation of layout for almost all web sites. I have read several books now and I still believe that I am slightly lost when it comes time to applying what I know from scratch. Over the past several months, I’ve been keeping a list for myself of potentially amazing tools and applications (most web based – all of them free) to make my CSS web design experience a snap. I purposely cut out over 30 options from this list, because these are the most user friendly and simplest to use.. Location: CSS / Webmaster Tools

Create rounded corners in your design without images manipulation 13/02/2010

Be the first to RankAbout a year or two ago I wrote a quick demo on doing rounded corners in just CSS without using images, mostly as an exercise to see what's involved. Since then my knowledge of CSS has doubled, maybe even tripled - so here I'm going to present 'cleaner' versions of those methods. I did a second example just a month back, and after presenting it on several forums I was linked to other methods of doing this, and decided to condense the best of all techniques down to a single easy to deploy version.
